happy is hiraen

hiraen = happy (Lhaesine pronunciation = HIH-raawn) (adjective) (some things Google found for "hiraen": an uncommon to rare term which is close in spelling to the common term "hiren"; user names; something called Hiraen Aravit's Sul Sphere in EverQuest 2; Hiraen National Sanatorium and Hiraen clays of Japan)

Merry Christmas!

lead is rudas (revisited)

rudas = lead (Lhaesine pronunciation = ruh-DAHS) (noun) (metal) (some things Google found for "rudas": a common term; Rudas Baths in Budapest which were first built during the Turkish occupation of Hungary in 1550; RUDAS stands for Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale; a last name that can be Hungarian or can be Hispanic; means "brown" in Lithuanian)

My previous word for "lead" was "rudis". This is a small change. I think my new word looks somewhat heavier, more like lead.

This word has been revised again. The Lhaesine word for "lead" is now "burc". This posting is no longer current.

09 December 2008

swamp is dutha (revisited)

dutha = swamp (Lhaesine pronunciation = DUHTH-uh) (noun) (some things Google found for "dutha": an uncommon to rare term; an unusual last name that can be from France or Ireland or Hungary or India; name of a city in Turkey; user names; Dutha river and Dutha Knights in the World of Terris fantasy game setting; Dutha Spring in Western Australia; a place in a poem of Ossian which is supposedly Scottish-Gaelic)

My previous Lhaesine word for "swamp" was "dufash", which was rather unwieldy. I can use the "th" consonant combination in Lhaesine, and I should try to use it more often.

01 December 2008

zinc is ninel (revisited)

ninel = zinc (Lhaesine pronunciation = NIH-nehl) (noun) (metal) (some things Google found for "ninel": a common term; Ninel Conde is a Mexican actress and singer; a feminine Russian first name which is a backward spelling of Lenin, the Communist revolutionary leader; a last name, notably musician Emma Ninel; user names)

My previous Lhaesine word for "zinc" was "nines". Even though my conlang word was pronounced differently than "nines" in English, I decided to modify this word. Somehow "nines" didn't seem quite fitting.

Zinc is the fourth most common metal in use today.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "zinc" is now "linel". This posting is no longer current.

25 November 2008

bronze is srale (revisited)

srale = bronze (Lhaesine pronunciation = SRAIL) (noun and adjective) (metal alloy) (some things Google found for "srale": an uncommon term; user names; a misspelling of sale; a misspelling of scale)

My previous Lhaesine word for "bronze" was "sral", so this is a minor modification. I decided to add an "e" to the end of the word, which changes how the "a" is pronounced. It also changes the look of this conlang word.

Bronze is the term used for alloys of copper and tin.

17 November 2008

silver is tishar (revisited)

tishar = silver (Lhaesine pronunciation = TIH-shar) (noun, adjective) (some things Google found for "tishar": an uncommon to rare term; an unusual last name; an unsual first name; TIS/HAR stations are low-power AM radio stations used in the US by government for travelers information and highway advisories; user names; USDA's Tishar series of well drained soils; in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series character Elisane Tishar was the first Amyrlin Seat of the Aes Sedai)

My previous word for "silver" was "tirsar". It had a "rs" consonant combination in it, which I'm not certain I want to use in Lhaesine. I think that my new word is easier to pronounce.

This is the fifth word I've defined for silver, a record for number of revisions to a single word. Hopefully this one will stick.

It didn't stick, this word has been revised again. I went back to the previous word, and the Lhaesine word for "silver" is once again "tirsar".

This word has been revised yet again. The Lhaesine word for "silver" is now "tirsa". This posting is no longer current.

09 November 2008

fresh is haila

haila = fresh (Lhaesine pronunciation = HAY-luh) (adjective) (some things Google found for "haila": an uncommon term; a feminine first name, notably Cuban singer Haila Maria Mompié and actress and producer Haila Stoddard; Haila Haila is a Bollywood Hindi song; a last name that can be Finnish; Haila Engineering Group of Iowa offers architectural and structured engineering; Haila is a song title by Polish doom metal group Cemetery of Scream; places in Syria, China, Pakistan, and Sierra Leone)

I originally looked up the information on this word for Miresua, my Basque/Finnish conlang. I decided not to use "haila" at the last minute, for reasons I won't go into here. Not all words from Miresua can be used in Lhaesine. Lhaesine and Miresua are quite different languages.

01 November 2008

purple is toiza (revisited)

toiza = purple (Lhaesine pronunciation = TOY-zuh) (adjective) (color) (some things Google found for "toiza": an uncommon to rare term; user names; Pokémon Toiza Charmander, Toiza Bulbasaur, and Toiza Squirtle; an unusual last name)

My previous Lhaesine word for "purple" was "toisa". I have the letter "z" in this conlang, might as well use it.

This word ends my series of color word modifications.

25 October 2008

orange is henoul (revisited)

henoul = orange (Lhaesine pronunciation = HEH-nool) (adjective) (color) (some things Google found for "henoul": a rare term; a last name which can be Belgian)

My previous Lhaesine word for "orange" was "racoul". Maybe this new word seems more fitting to me because it resembles the word henna, which is a plant used to make a reddish-orange dye.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "orange" is now "hoanar". This posting is no longer current.

17 October 2008

green is vaela (revisited)

vaela = green (Lhaesine pronunciation = VAAW-luh) (adjective) (some things Google found for "vaela": an uncommon term; a last name; user names; Vaela Pallas Cultural Resort and Spa in Greece; Vaela Traxis is a game character in Vanguard Saga of Heroes; name of cities in Estonia and Mozambique)

I'm continuing to rethink and modify my words for colors. My previous word for green was "wale".

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "green" is now "daela". This posting is no longer current.

09 October 2008

yellow is jonde (redone)

jonde = yellow (Lhaesine pronunciation = JOAND) (adjective) (some things Google found for "jonde": an uncommon term; JONDE is an acronym for Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (National Youth Orchestra of Spain); Jonde Lane Farm Bed & Breakfast in Pennsylvania; a first name, notably artist Jonde Northcutt; a last name; user names; Jonde is a Finnish Electronic HipHop musical artist)

My previous word for "yellow" was "juila". It made me think of the feminine name Julia. I realize that "jonde" resembles the French word for "yellow" which is "jaune".

This word has been redone. The Lhaesine word for "yellow" is now "pethas". This posting is no longer current.

01 October 2008

black is ferac (revisited)

ferac = black (Lhaesine pronunciation = FEH-rack) (adjective) (some things Google found for "ferac": an uncommon to rare term; FERAC is an acronym for Fisheries, Ecology and Recreation Advisory Committee in Wales; user names; a US aviation navigation waypoint; a last name; gaming character name; FERAC Builders and Development of the Philippines; Latin language stem or base of words meaning fertile; name of a place in Turkey)

Orginally my word for "black" was "ferag". Then, for pronunciation reasons, I changed the word to "ferhag". Now I'm changing it again.

25 September 2008

blue is rima (redone)

rima = blue (Lhaesine pronunciation = RIH-muh) (some things Google found for "rima": a very common term; a feminine first name that can be Arabic in origin; Rima a.k.a Rima the Jungle Girl is a Victorian-novel heroine adapted for comic books; Rima Mashiro is a female supporting character in anime and manga series Shugo Chara; a crack or fissure on the moon; RIMA Manufacturing Company; a last name; means "rhyme" in Croatian, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish; means "five" in Maori; name of cities in China, Italy, Burkina Faso, Honduras, and United Arab Emirates)

I'm redoing this conlang word again. My previous Lhaesine word for "blue" was "sris", which was a good word but somehow not quite right.

By the way, my word for "blue" in Miresua, my Basque-Finnish inspired conlang, is "usin". In Illunse, Kate's constructed language, "blue" is "suthe".

17 September 2008

white is sare (revisited)

sare = white (Lhaesine pronunciation = SAYR) (adjective) (some things Google found for "sare": an uncommon term; SARE is an acronym for Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education; a last name; Sare is a Basque village in the Aquitaine region of France near the Spanish border; seems to be a variation of the feminine first name Sarah; Sare Plastics is a company in Ohio; means "net" in Basque; means "salt" in Romanian; name of cities in Kenya, Nigeria, Cameroon, Serbia & Montenegro, Croatia, Burkino Faso, East Timor, Pakistan, Estonia)

My previous word for white was "sahre". After much consideration, I decided to drop the "h" from this word. This makes the word less cryptic looking, and only changes the pronunciation somewhat. In Lhaesine "hr" is pronounced as a "rolled r".

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "white" is now "shaye". This posting is no longer current.

09 September 2008

lamp is mirade (reinstated)

mirade = lamp (Lhaesine pronunciation = MIH-raid) (noun) (some things Google found for "mirade": an uncommon term; a last name, notably Dan Mirade who writes about wrestling; Mirade Studios of the UK is a video production service; user names; a masculine first name that may be Kurdish or Zambian; name of a city in Iraq)

Way back in 2005, I defined the Lhaesine word for "lamp" to be "mirade", then soon after modified it to "mrade". I'm not sure why I decided to use that strange "mr" consonant combination. As an experiment perhaps? Anyway, I'm changing this word back to what it orginally was.

Lhaesine dictionary project marks three years

I started the Lhaesine Dictionary Project exactly three years ago today. This is the 690th post to the blog. Given my multitude of revisions as I figure the rules and the look of this fantasy language, that works out to be about 450 made-up words in Lhaesine, and that's a considerable number of words.

Although this conlang language project is important to me, starting today I'm going to scale back my frequency of updates to this blog. I've considered cutting back for some time. There are other things in my life I need to get doing. I'll still be adding words here in Lhaesine, just not as often. All of you who have stopped by over the past three years, from throughout the world, thank you for visiting my eccentric project. There will be more words to come.

pain is nazaln (revisited)

nazuln = pain (Lhaesine pronunciation = NAH-zuhln) (noun) (some things Google found for "nazuln": a nearly unique term; appears on two pages containing many gobbledygook combinations of letters)

My previous Lhaeine word for "pain" was "nazan". As commenter to this blog named Nazan kindly pointed out to me, Nazan is a feminine Turkish first name. I don't want to cause anyone pain with my defintions. This is made-up language, and my words can be easily changed. So, in respect for her, and all other women named Nazan, I've changed my word for "pain" to something more unusual.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "pain" is now "nazult". This posting is no longer current.

31 August 2008

twenty is calt

calt = twenty (Lhaesine pronunciation = CAHLT) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "calt": an uncommon term; a last name, notably author Stephen Calt; CALT is an acronym for The Centre for Advanced Learning Technologies in France; CALT stands for China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology in Aerospace; CALT is an acronym for Computerized Achievement Levels Tests; Calt Silicone Rubber Products (Nanjing) Co., Ltd of China; CALT stands for Conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue; CALT stands for Computer Assisted Language Testing (or Teaching))

Twenty is where my counting numbers upwards ends, at least for now. I'm thinking that the number system will be base twenty, instead of our familiar base ten. Apparently this means that in the land of Lhae you count on your fingers and your toes.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "twenty" is now "weth". This posting is no longer current.

27 August 2008

nineteen is gelhe

gelhe = nineteen (Lhaesine pronunciation = GEELH) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "gelhe": an uncommon to rare term; means "population" in Kurdish; a last name; user names; a misspelling or bad OCR scan of "gelbe" which can mean "yellow" in German; Dol Gelhe is a place in the former county of Merionethshire in Wales)

Upward again, here's my conlang word for "ninteen". It bears some resemblance to my word for "nine" which is "gaez".

This word has been redone. The Lhaesine word for "nineteen" is now "udar".

This word has been revised again. The Lhaesine word for "nineteen" is now "zumar". This posting is no longer current.

23 August 2008

eighteen is rois

rois = eighteen (Lhaesine pronunciation = ROYCE) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "rois": a very common term; means "kings" in French (rois is pronounced RWA in French); Galette des Rois is a cake made to celebrate Epiphany in France; ROIs stands for Regions of Interest; a last name; an Irish feminine first name; name of a city in Spain)

Continuing upward with numbers to eighteen. This word features the vowel combination "oi" which I seldom seem to use. It's like I forget that I can use it. Take note that my word for "eight" in Lhaesine is "ruxe".

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "eighteen" is now "noiya". This posting is no longer current.

19 August 2008

seventeen is tibun

tibun = seventeen (Lhaesine pronunciation = TIH-buhn) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "tibun": an uncommon to rare term; user names; Panu Tibun Island in Papua New Guinea; a last name; means "bowl" in conlang Tatari Faran; a word in the romanized transliteration of the national anthem of the Maldives)

Counting upward, and adding another new word. This Lhaesine word bears some similarity to my word for "seven" which is "teful".

This word has been redone. The Lhaesine word for "seventeen" is now "balt". This posting is no longer current.

15 August 2008

sixteen is anare

anare = sixteen (Lhaesine pronunciation = AH-nayr) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "anare": an uncommon term; ANARE (pronounced an-ah-ree) is an acronym for Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions; the Anare Mountains are along the northern coast of Victoria Land in Antarctica; a masculine first name from Fiji; user name; a last name; ANARE stands for Asociacion de Nacional de Remolcadores (Spanish Tugowners Association); a city in Venezuela)

Counting upward. This is a newly created word, not a revision. In Lhaesine "six" is "aler". Following my pattern, there is some similarly between my words for "six" and "sixteen".

This word has been redone as part of a series of number revisions. The Lhaesine word for "sixteen" is now "evaen". This posting is no longer current.

11 August 2008

fifteen is ost (revisited)

ost = fifteen (Lhaesine pronunciation = AWST) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "ost": a very common term; .OST is a Windows file type associated with Microsoft Outlook; OST is an acronym for Original Sound Track; OST stands for Office of the Secretary of Transportation; OST stands for Out-of-School Time; OST is a Basque Country heavy metal band; a last name; user names; a city in Italy)

Continuing with numbers. My previous word for "fifteen" was "aosit". That was an odd word, and a little too similar to my word for "five" which is "aos".

This word has been redone. The Lhaesine word for "fifteen" is now "osta". This posting is no longer current.

07 August 2008

fourteen is srihe (revisited)

srihe = fourteen (Lhaesine pronunciation = SREYE'h) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "srihe": an uncomon to rare term; SRIHE stands for Sequoia Region Institute for Higher Education in California; user names; bad OCR transcription of the word "scene" from an old newspaper document; on Angband which is a dungeon exploration game there's a scroll titled "nagprok srihe" of Teleportation; last name of a character in a Star Wars fan fiction story; appears in what looks like gobbledygook text)

My previous word for "fourteen" was "srige". This word, "srihe", was an earlier version of the word for "four". By the way, currently my word for "four" is "srin".

This word has been redone. The Lhaesine word for "fourteen" is now "fihe". This posting is no longer current.

03 August 2008

thirteen is louca (redone)

louca = thirteen (Lhaesine pronunciation = LOO-kuh) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "louca": a very common term; a last name, notably accessories designer Joanna Louca; a last name that may be a variation of the similar-looking Portuguese last name "Louçã"; "louca" means "insane person" in Portuguese (seems to be used like Spanish "loco"); Palma Louca ("wild palm") is a Brazilian lager beer; Frixos Louca Ltd is a Cyprus property development company; a last name that can be from Oceania)

As thirteen is thought by some to be unlucky, having a word that can mean "crazy or wild" seems sort of fitting.

My previous word for "thirteen" was "leugan". I was never entirely happy with that word, and besides it contains the vowel combination "eu" which is no longer used in Lhaesine. (If you like "eu" as a vowel combination, it's used in my other conlang, Miresua.) By the way, my word for "three" is "luec".

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "thirteen" is now "shoun".

This word has been revised again. The Lhaesine word for "thirteen" is now "dache". This posting is no longer current.

31 July 2008

twelve is heth (redone)

heth = twelve (Lhaesine pronunciation = HEHTH) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "heth": a common term; a last name, notably Confederate Civil War general Henry Heth (pronounced to rhyme with "teeth") and elderly black woman Joice Heth who P.T. Barnum put on display in 1835 advertising that she was the 161-year-old former nurse of George Washington(!); a letter in many Semitic alphabets; Heth & Jed are NYC musicians or buskers; The Children of Heth are a Canaanite nation in the Hebrew Bible; name of a Jaredite in the Book of Mormon; means "dog" in Arapaho; a town in Arkansas; a city in Pakistan)

Continuing with number revisions. My previous Lhaesine word for "twelve" was "heita". My new word is simplier. Note that my word for "two" is "hede".

This word has been redone. The Lhaesine word for "twelve" is now "cers". This posting is no longer current.

27 July 2008

eleven is maigur (revisited)

maigur = eleven (Lhaesine pronunciation = MAY-guhr) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "maigur": an uncommon to rare term; a last name that's possibly a variation of Maguire and a name from India; a road in the city of Jamkhandi in the State of Karnataka in India)

My previous Lhaesine word for "eleven" was "magre". I've changed the spelling, but the pronunciation remains nearly the same. My new word is two syllables, instead of just one. It bears some resemblance to my word for "one" which is "mag".

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "eleven" is now "jaem". I decided that I didn't want my word for eleven to look like my word for one; I changed my mind.

This word has been revised again. The Lhaesine word for "eleven" is now "jond". This posting is no longer current.

23 July 2008

paint is bresane (revisited)

bresane = paint (Lhaesine pronunciation = BREH-sayn) (noun) (some things Google found for "bresane": an uncommon to rare term; a place in Croatia and/or Serbia & Montenegro and/or Kosovo; a last name that can be Brazilian)

My previous Lhaesine word for "paint" was "brese". I'm lengthening the word by two letters, and at the same time making it look less like the word for wheat which is "brene".

19 July 2008

word is toalan (revisited)

toalan = word (Lhaesine pronunciation = TOE-lahn) (noun) (some things Google found for "toalan": an uncommon to rare term; an unusual last name that can be Irish in origin; user names; a misspelling of "to Alan"; an ancient culture on Sulawesi island of Indonesia around 5000-1000 B.C.)

My previous word for "word" was "tolcan", which had a "lc" consonant combination that I don't think I'll be using in Lhaesine.

15 July 2008

ivy is saneisa

saneisa = ivy (Lhaesine pronunciation = sah-NEE-suh) (noun) (plant) (some things Google found for "saneisa": a rare term; user names; an unusual feminine name; a last name of someone in Panama; saneisa.com was a former web domain featuring Celtic and Medieval Merchandise)

I seem to be creating mostly four-letter and five-letter words for Lhaesine. More variation in the length of my words would probably be good, so here's a seven-letter word.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "ivy" is now "saneasa". This posting is no longer current.

11 July 2008

seven is teful (revisited)

teful = seven (Lhaesine pronunciation = TEH-fuhl, nearly rhymes with devil) (adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "teful": an uncommon to rare term; a sequence of letters contained in the words grateful, spiteful, wasteful, and tasteful; mispelling of T-fal which is a brand of cookware and housewares; user names; a last name)

My previous Lhaesine word for "seven" was "tewil". This is a revision for easing pronunciation.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "pink" is now "beshe". This posting is no longer current.

03 July 2008

sithe = stream (Lhaesine pronunciation = SYETH, same as scythe) (noun) (A small natural watercourse) (some things Google found for "sithe": an uncommon term; Sithe Global Power and Sithe Energies; Sithe More House Bed and Breakfast in Western Scotland; a last name that can be English; user names; old spelling of "scythe"; fantasy character name; Sithe (or Sithè) is a place in Burma)

This is another new word. It was originally intended to be a revision of my word for "swamp", but I reliazed that it would be useful to have a word for "marsh". After all, marshes and swamps are two different things.

23 June 2008

nothing is mina

mina = nothing (Lhaesine pronunciation = MIH-nuh) (noun) (some things Google found for "mina": a very common term; Mina is an Italian pop singer; Mina is a last name; Mina is a female fictional cleric character in the Dragonlance universe; Mina is a feminine first name that can be Japanese, Korean, Indian or Turkish in origin; "Mina" can be short for German feminine name Wilhelmina; Mina Harker is a fictional character in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula; Mina are a tribe and caste in northern India; "minä" means "I" and "me" in Finnish; "mina" means "mine" (as in mining) in Portuguese and Spanish; "mina" means "mine" (as in landmine) in Croatian, Czech, and Swedish; Mina is the name of numerous cities in countries such as the Philippines, Pakistan, Guatemala, Morocco, Ethiopia, Mexico, and Gambia)

A new word! A break from the all the revisions I've been doing lately in Lhaesine.

This word has been changed. The Lhaesine word for "nothing" is now "lunt". This posting is no longer current.

I have redefined "mina" in Lhaesine as "skin".

19 June 2008

mud is vuhe (reinstated)

vuhe = mud (Lhaesine pronunciation = VYOOH) (noun) (some things Google found for "vuhe": an uncommon to rare term; an unusual last name; user names; means something in an artistic fictional language called Lara; "vuhe" or "vuhé" means something in Breton; vuhe.ru is a Russian website selling miniature wireless headphones)

My previous Lhaesine word for "gray" was "laica". I'm modifying the first vowel to fit how I want to pronounce this word, which is like the German camera manufacturer Leica.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "gray" is now "lige". This posting is no longer current.

11 June 2008

star is lire (revisited)

lire = star (Lhaesine pronunciation = LYER, or lyre) (noun) (some things Google found for "lire"; a very common term; means "to read" in French; Lire is Open Source log analysis software; more than one Italian lira, plural of lira; a French literary magazine; LIRE is a joint research unit in 18th and 19th century literature in France; means "lira (currency)" in Afrikaans, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish; similar word "lirë" means "cheap or free" in Albanian: places in Alsace region of France (also called Liré), Uganda, and Turkey)

My previous word for "star" was "liiha". I think this new word is simpler and more elegant.

This word has been redone. Nothing wrong with this word, I expect lire will be reused. The word for "star" is now "avel". This posting is no longer current.

07 June 2008

frost is bevun (revisited)

bevun = frost (Lhaesine pronunciation = BEH-vuhn) (noun) (some things Google found for "bevun": a rare term; an unusual last name; user name; a misspelling of "begun"; means "to scold" in Dhivehi which is the language of Maldives)

wing is juoca (revisited)

juoca = wing (Lhaesine pronunciation = JUUH-cuh) (noun) (some things Google found for "juoca": a rare term; JUOCA is the USDA symbol for the juniperus occidentalis or western juniper or Sierra juniper; user name; may mean something in Italian or an Italian dialect)

My previous word for "wing" was "jeuca". I've decided not to use the "eu" vowel combination in Lhaesine. This "uo" vowel combination is new, it'll be pronounced like the "oo" in "book".

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "wing" is now "jeura". This posting is no longer current.

29 May 2008

vara = bell (Lhaesine pronunciation = VAH-ruh) (some things Google found for "vara": a very common term; VARA is Vermont Alpine Racing Association; Omroepvereniging VARA is a public broadcasting organization in the Netherlands; Vara Chevrolet in San Antonio, Texas; Vara software offers products to create presentations and webcasts; a woman's and a man's first name, probably Indian; Vara's Beach House has accommodations on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands; VARA is Voluntary Association for Rehabilitation of Afghanistan; VARA is Victor Amateur Radio Association headquartered in New Jersey; the Vara-tones are a '60s surf music band; Vara Healing Arts of Albany, California; a last name, probably Hispanic; last name "De La Vara"; "coxa vara" is an unusual hip condition; VARA is Visual Artists Rights Act; VarA stands for Verified And Recipient Authorized for email; "tibia vara" is also known as Blount disease which causes bowlegs; Vara is an old Spanish and Portuguese unit of length of between 32 to 43 inches; Maytag Vara dishwashers; Vara Valley, Liguria, Italy; Vara Hostels in Sweden; Baterie Vara was a German WWII fort in Norway; "S'Vara" is the Hebrew word for "reason"; means "rod, pole, or stick" in Spanish and Portuguese; means "early" in Estonian; means "spare or reserve" in Finnish; means "summer" in Romanian; means verb "be, exist” and noun "article, product” in Swedish; places in Turkey, Iran, Burkina Faso, Estonia, Portugal, Sweden, and Solomon Islands)

With this word I'm bringing the letter "v" back into Lhaesine. I can use all the consonants I can get, so I changed my mind about disallowing "v".

My initial word for "bell" was "vara", which I later modified to "fara". I'm returning to "vara". Some of the information listed in this posting has been updated.

25 May 2008

corpse is lagur (revisited)

lagur = corpse (Lhaesine pronunciation = LAH-guhr) (noun) (some things Google found for "lagur": an uncommon term; an Israeli real estate website; user names; a last name; World of Warcraft character; Lagur Bakfar Ltd is an housing building and revovation company in Isreal; means "to live in" in Hebrew (transliterated); means "watered, wet" in Albanian)

My previous word for "corpse" was "laguer". Although the "ue" vowel combination is allowed, I'm not quite sure I know how I'd pronounce it followed by an "r". My word meaning interestingly clashes with the Hebrew meaning, but I'll leave it be.

This word has been revised. The word for "corpse" is now "laglar". This posting is no longer current.

garden is merigen (revisited)

merigen = garden (Lhaesine pronunciation = meh-RIH-gehn) (noun) (some things Google found for "merigen": an uncommon to rare term; Merigen Medical of Fargo, North Dakota; user names; a last name; an unusual first name; Merigen OÜ is an Estonian importer of stockings, socks, and underwear; MeriGen Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Italy; a form of the Old English word for "morning")

My previous word for "garden" was "merign". I've decided not to use the "gn" consonant combination in Lhaesine. Besides, this word was the only word that was using it.

This is a amother tweak of an existing Lhaesine word. I know I've been "revisiting" words for a while here, but I'm trying to get rid of some inconsistancies. If you want to see new words, I'm actively defining more new words on my other conlang, Miresua. Miresua is not related to Lhaesine.

13 May 2008

black is ferhag (revisited)

ferhag = black (Lhaesine pronunciation = FEHR-ahg) (adjective) (color) (some things Google found for "ferhag": a rare term; user names; bad OCR transcription of "feeling" from an old text; may be a rare last name)

My previous Lhaesine word for "black" was "ferag". This is one of the oldest words created in Lhaesine. I'm tweaking the spelling to agree with how I pronounce the word.

This word has been revised again. The word for "black" is now "ferac". This posting is no longer current.

09 May 2008

floor is giron (revisited)

giron = floor (Lhaesine pronunciation = GIH-rawn) (noun) (some things Google found for "giron": a very common term; a last name, notably horror writer Sephera Giron and New Mexico politician Rebecca Vigil-Giron; Playa Girón is another name for the beach of the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion in Cuba; Girón Books; Giron or Girón is the name of places in Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Venezuela)

My previous Lhaesine word for "floor" was "girone". I'm shortening this word -- going for the short "o" sound this time.

Lhaesine spelling and pronunciation

Given the spelling of a Lhaesine word, you should be able to pronounce it. Unlike English, Lhaesine has rules that it should follow consistently.

Last month I posted an English sentence spelled using my Lhaesine pronunciation rules - last month's posting. This was an interesting exercise for me as a conlanger; it made me think some things through. So I'm continuing on with same the text. This is the second sentence of chapter one of the book She by H. Rider Haggard.

English:
So it is with the scene that I am about to describe; it rises so clearly before my mind at this moment as though it happened yesterday.

English using Lhaesine spelling rules:
Soa it iz with thu sene that Iy am ubaot tou duscribe; it riizez soa cleirley bifor miy miind at this moamunt as thoa it happunud yesturday.

fate is loasra (revisited)

loasra = fate (Lhaesine pronunciation = LOH-sruh) (noun) (some things Google found for "loasra": a very rare term; probably a name in a Hungarian language RPG-related novella; gobbledygook or uncorrected OCR generated text from old documents)

My previous Lhaesine word for "fate" was "losra". This is another spelling tweak for retaining the long "o" pronunciation.

27 April 2008

fat is goala (revisited)

goala = fat (Lhaesine pronunciation = GOH-luh) (adjective) (some things Google found for "goala": a common term; user names; a last name that can be from India; a pastoral caste whose main occupation was milkmen; may mean something in Romanian; places in Bangladesh, Haiti, Burkina Faso, Romania, Chad, and Sierra Leone)

My previous Lhaesine word for "fat" was "gola". I decided to go with the long "o" sound (instead of the short one) for this word, so I adjusted the spelling. This is another small revision. I think it's sort of fitting for the word for "fat" to use a "fatter-looking" vowel.

This word has been revised. The word for "fat" is now "gole". This posting is no longer current.

23 April 2008

mother is roawa (revisited)

roawa = mother (Lhaesine pronunciation = ROH-wuh) (some things Google found for "roawa": a rare term; may mean something in Turkish or Kurdish or Arabic (transliterated); user names; probably a word in something called Paralingua; an unusual feminine first name)

My previous Lhaesine word for "mother" was "rowa". This is another minor spelling change with the pronunciation remaining the same.

19 April 2008

three is luec (revisited)

luec = three (Lhaesine pronunciation = LUC, as English word "luck")(adjective) (number) (some things Google found for "luec": an uncommon term; LUEC stands for Levelized Unit Energy Cost in Canada; LUEC stands for Leicester Underwater Exploration Club in the UK; user names; a last name that can be German in origin; to the city of Olympia Washington LUEC stands for Land Use and Environment Committee; LUEC Insurance Services)

Revising this word again. Maybe this word will stick.

15 April 2008

road is soaha (revisited)

soaha = road (Lhaesine pronunciation = SOH-huh) (noun) (some things Google found for "soaha": an uncommon to rare term; user names; SoAHA stands for South Alabama Horse Association; means something like "get, have, receive" in Karelian which is a language closely related to Finnish which is spoken mainly in a area in Russia; may mean something in a language called Paralingua)

cream is oanuca (revisited)

oanuca = cream (Lhaesine pronunciation = oh-NUH-kuh) (some things Google found for "oanuca": a very rare term; may be a user name or may be just gobbledygook)

My previous Lhaesine word for "cream" was "onuca". This is a minor spelling change for my rule changes involving the vowel "o". The pronunciation of this word is unchanged.

07 April 2008

box is coaya (revisited)

coaya = box (Lhaesine pronunciation = COH-yuh) (noun) (some things Google found for "coaya": a rare term; Coaya has IT outsourcing services; a last name that can be Hispanic; user name; part of a Finnish Border Collie's name)

My previous Lhaesine word for "box" was "coya". This is a minor spelling change to retain the same pronunciation.

I'm making modifications to my rules for the vowel "o". I'm adding the new vowel combination of "oa" to represent the long "o" sound, as in the English word "boat". If I didn't change the spelling of this word, my new conlang rules would have the "o" pronounced like in the English word "not". Behind the scenes, I'm changing the posted Lhaesine pronunciation, but not the spelling, of some other existing words.

03 April 2008

belt is ruec (revisited)

ruec = belt (Lhaesine pronunciation = RUK, same as English word ruck) (some things Google found for "ruec": an uncommon term; user name; a last name; In Italy RUEC stands for Regolamento Urbanistico Edilizio Comunale; RUEC stands for Roseville Utility Exploration Center in Roseville, California; to UK Royal Mail RUEC stands for Real Unit Environmental Cost; RUEC stand for Registro Único de Entidades de Capacitación (Registry of Training Agencies) in Uruguay)

Lhaesine spelling and pronunciation

Given the spelling of a Lhaesine word, you should be able to pronounce it. Unlike English, Lhaesine has rules that it should follow consistently.

Below is a sentence in English and how I (an American) might spell that same sentence using my Lhaesine spelling rules.

English:
There are some events of which each circumstance and surrounding detail seem to be graven on the memory in such fashion that we cannot forget them.

English using Lhaesine spelling rules:
Ther aer som eiventz of wich eche surhcumstans and surhraonding deitale seme tou bey graivun on thu memorey in such fashun that wey cannot forhget them.

This sentence starts chapter one of the book She by H. Rider Haggard which was first published in 1887.

31 March 2008

bold is ral (redone)

ral = bold (Lhaesine pronunciation = RAHL) (adjective) (some things Google found for "ral": a very common term; RAL (color space system) is German-developed system mainly used to describe paint colors; RAL stands for Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK; RAL stands for Refund Anticipation Loan which tax services offer; RAL stands for Research Applications Laboratory to NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research); RAL stands for Richmond Animal League; RAL Supply Group Inc. of New York; RAL Resort Property Management Inc.; first name of a masculine anime character; Ral Partha was a company that made miniature figures for role playing games; places in India and Portugal)

My previous Lhaesine word for "bold" was "redh". I won't be using the "dh" consonant combination in this conlang. This was another word I created some time ago. I've redone the word.

27 March 2008

sorcery is soixar (revisited)

soixar = sorcery (Lhaesine pronunciation = SOIKS-awr) (noun, adjective) (some things Google found for "soixar": a rare term; a web fractured or misspelling of the French word "soixante" which means "sixty"; means something in a constructed language called Paralingua)

My previous Lhaesine word for "sorcery" was "soixha". I don't know what I was thinking with that weird "xh" combination. I'm revising this word to fit within my conlang rules.

23 March 2008

hair is eche (revisited)

eche = hair (Lhaesine pronunciation = EECH) (noun) (some things Google found for "eche": a very common term; a last name; ECHE stands for European Conference on the History of Economics; ECHE stands for European Conference on Health Economics; user names; Middle English spelling of "each"; means "bait" in French; means "throw or jettison" in Spanish)

My previous Lhaesine conlang word for "hair" was "eicha". Although it may not look like it from the spelling, as far as pronunciation this change merely removes the last syllable. The plural of the Lhaesine word "eche" is "eichur".

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "hair" is now "ech". This posting is no longer current.

19 March 2008

cruel is trouca

trouca = cruel (Lhaesine pronunciation = TROO-kuh) (noun) (some things Google found for "trouca": an uncommon to rare term; rue du Pont Trouca and Roc Trouca in Avignon, France; Goera trouca is a species of some kind of insect-like critter; name on a UK dinner/dating site; Baou Trouca appears in some French place names)

In hindsight, after doing this Lhaesine conlang word, I wonder if I had the English words "truculent" (savage, ferocious) and "truncheon" (club, staff, baton) in the back of my mind.

15 March 2008

flower is talis (revisited)

talis = flower (Lhaesine pronunciation = TAH-lihs) (noun) (some things Google found for "talis": a common term; a UK based company using Semantic Web technologies that has library management software; Talis Advisory Services LLC is a Texas-based Investment Advisor; Talis Group offers staffing services in Kentucky; k. talis jewelry; a first name that can me masculine or feminine; Talis Real Estate Group of San Francisco Bay Area; Talis Haftetiketten GmbH sells self-adhesive labels; a last name that can be British; means "such, of such a kind" in Latin; name of cities in Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Greece)

My previous Lhaesine word for "flower" was "talise". I'm dropping the final "e", which is silent, but this alters the pronunciation of the word. This change is like dropping the final "e" off the word "kite" and getting "kit".

11 March 2008

mountain is reihas (revisited)

reihas = mountain (Lhaesine pronunciation = REE-hahs) (noun) (some things Google found for "reihas": a rare term; a character name; an unusual last name; user name; may mean something in Lithuanian; several odd misspellings of "REI has" which refer to outdoor gear company REI)

My previous Lhaesine word for "mountain" was "riyase". I've revised this word multiple times, but not recently. Maybe this time the word will stick.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "mountain" is now "rihas". This posting is no longer current.

07 March 2008

My previous Lhaesine word for "road" was "sohage". This is a shortening of the original word to somethig simiplier and easier to pronounce.

This word has been revised, again. The word for "road" is now "soaha". This posting is no longer current.

27 February 2008

hole is daora

daora = hole (Lhaesine pronunciation = DOW-ruh) (noun) (some things Google found for "daora": an uncommon term; a places in Bangladesh and Western Sahara; Daora Sushi is a restaurant in the Boston, Massachusetts area; Kushala Daora is a tough monster on Playstation's Monster Hunter; a last name; user names; "The Gates of Daora" is the title of fantasy book which is likely unpublished)

This word was inspired by a word (daura) that I created for but didn't end up using in my other conlang, Miresua.

23 February 2008

son is tir (redone)

tir = son (Lhaesine pronunciation = TIHR) (noun) (some things Google found for "tir": a very common term; Tír na nÓg in Irish Mythology is an Otherworld which in English is called something like the Land of Eternal Youth; the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) has a kingdom of An Tir; Tir is a Macedonian International Freight Forwarder; TIR stands for Thermal Infrared in a NASA radiometer; TIR stands for Traumatic Incident Reduction in health; TiR stands for Teacher in Residence at Metropolitan State College of Denver; "tir" means "country" in Irish; places in Pakistan, India, Turkey, Iran, and Sudan)

This is a major change. I'm redoing this word to something short, with only one syllable.  My previous word for "son" was "cihan", which was related to my word for "man" which is "cin".

19 February 2008

daughter is torha (revisited)

torha = daughter (Lhaesine pronunciation = TOHR-uh) (noun) (some things Google found for "torha": an uncommon to rare term; a misspelling or alternate spelling of "torah" which means "doctrine, teaching" in Hebrew (transliterated) and is the most important document in Judaism; user names; Ti-n-Torha caves of Tadrart Acacus area in Libya are archaeological sites; gaming character name; a last name)

My previous word for "daughter" was "torhan". This is a minor change, but it represents some rethinking. Although I hadn't planned to use grammatical gender in Lhaesine, I've tended to use the "a" ending for many feminine nouns. I studied Spanish in school, so I think that I unconsciously copied this from Spanish. (But, note, I have no words ending in "o", which is the Spanish masculine noun ending.)

15 February 2008

sister is perhin (revisited)

perhin = sister (Lhaesine pronunciation = PEHR-ihn) (noun) (some things Google found for "perhin": an uncommon term; various user names; a misspelling or bad transcription of the last name "Perkin")

My previous Lhaesine word for "sister" was "pewan". I think my new word is somewhat easier to pronounce. So another tweaking of a word.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "sister" is now "leaya". This posting is no longer current.

My previous Lhaesine word for "six" was "jome", which didn't seem quite the right word for this conlang. As this blog shows, I freqently make revisions. This word was completely redone.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "six" is now "iler". This posting is no longer current.

07 February 2008

lyre is losind (redefined)

losind = lyre (Lhaesine pronunciation = LOH-sihnd) (noun) (musical instrument) (some things Google found for "losind": an uncommon to rare term; an unusual last name; common misspelling of "losing"; a place name in a fantasy story on Elfwood; LOSind can be a Length of Stay indicator)

This is a redefined word. Back about two years ago, "losind" was the Lhaesine word for "storm" (see previous posting), before I completely redid the word for "storm". I wanted to reuse this word.

03 February 2008

thick is hacal

27 January 2008

three is luce (revisited)

luce = three (Lhaesine pronunciation = LYOOK) (adjective, noun) (number) (some things Google found for "luce": a very common term; a last name, notably American publisher Henry Luce (1898-1967) (pronounced "loose") and his wife Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987) who was an American playwright, politician, and celebrity; a county in Michigan; a first name, notably French feminist psychoanalyst and philosopher Luce Irigaray; LUCE is an alternative rock band; Pizza Lucé in Minnesota; Luce Forward is a California law firm; La Luce is an Italian restaurant in Chicago; Luce is a Ristorante & Bar in Charlotte; means "light, opening" in Italian)

In Lhaesine the letter "c" is always a "hard c" or "k" sound.

23 January 2008

brick is yedan (revisited)

yedan = brick (Lhaesine pronunciation = YEH-dahn) (noun) (some things Google found for "yedan": an uncommon to rare term; user names; character Gade Yedan in Star Wars X-Wing Rogue Squadron: The Phantom Affair; how the Croatian word for "one" (jedan) is pronounced in English; means "wedding gift" in Korean)

guscen = blanket (Lhaesine pronunciation = guh-SKEHN) (noun) (some things Google found for "guscen": a very rare term; user names; "word" in gobbledygook text that is supposedly rat poison for email-harvesting spam-spiders)

My previous Lhaesine word for "blanket" was "gisaex", which a atypical word for this conlang that looked vaguely French.

15 January 2008

cloud is yela (revisited)

yela = cloud (Lhaesine pronunciation = YEH-luh) (noun) (some things Google found for "yela": an uncommon term; user names; an island which is also called Rossel Island in Papua New Guinea; Ma Yela is a Berber music CD by Akli D.; a last name that can be Spanish; mp3 by US artist Yela Wolf; Yela Yela is a Tamil song title; places in Burma, Ethiopia, Micronesia, Liberia, and Spain)

My previous Lhaesine word for "cloud" was "yetage".

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "cloud" is now "yena". This posting is no longer current.

11 January 2008

knife is anege (revisited)

anege = knife (Lhaesine pronunciation = AH-neeg) (noun) (some things Google found for "anege": an uncommon to rare term; ANEGE is the name of a air navigation fix or waypoint in Illinois; user names; a stool name which is more or less a title in Ghana; name of a fantasy gaming character)

07 January 2008

east is seidon (revisited)

My previous Lhaesine word for "east" was "seidor". This is a minor change to end the word with "n", to bring it in sync with my other cardinal compass points. I like it that Google I found some Eastern Asian meanings for this word.

This word has been revised. The Lhaesine word for "east" is now "seadon". This posting is no longer current.

03 January 2008

healthy is litena

litena = healthy (Lhaesine pronunciation = lih-TEH-nuh) (adjective) (some things Google found for "litena": an uncommon to rare term; user names; LITENA, UAB is a Lithuanian textile company; Litena Farm SRL in Romania; a misspelling, perhaps deliberately, of "retina" or retin-A"; a rare feminine first name)

This is another word that I've recycled from my other unrelated conlang, Miresua. Litena previously meant "tin", the metal, in Miresua. It's nearly impossible for me to reuse changed words within Miresua, because words in Miresua are built from the lettters found in the Basque and Finnish words. Fortunately for me litena also worked in Lhaesine. I have rules for what is allowed in Lhaesine, but most are unwritten.
